A Tax Investigation – What is it?
HMRC can review your tax affairs and the finances of your business at any time. There may be a specific reason or you may be selected at random. They are now using sophisticated software to start more than 80% of these enquiries, covering all aspects of taxation. The number of these enquiries has risen in recent years including last year by 21%. The Labour government have pledged an additional £555M per year for additional resources at HMRC, so we don’t believe these enquiries will become less frequent any time soon.

Reasons to take action
HMRC enquiries can be random, anyone can be targeted, even if you have done nothing wrong.
Last year the number of HMRC enquiries increased by 21% and HMRC generated an additional £34bn
in tax by targeting non-compliance.
The Labour government have pledged to invest £555M a year in additional HMRC resources and so
the increase in HMRC enquiries looks set to continue.
HMRC use a sophisticated database called Connect to start more than 80% of enquiries. Connect
analyse over 55 billion lines of data, including social media accounts, DVLA records, land registry and
bank accounts.
If HMRC select you for enquiry they will potentially look at all your books and records and/or ask
for more detail on specific transactions and may then raise an assessment for additional tax due.
We can represent you assuring the best possible defence against HMRC. However, our normal
accountancy fees do not include the cost of dealing with enquiries, which can be costly and complex,
even if no additional tax becomes due.
For a relatively low cost our Tax Fee Protection protects against fees we may incur dealing with HMRC
enquiries. We will manage the whole conversation with the taxman and challenge any findings at no
cost to yourself.
The protection gives you the comfort of knowing that we can defend you at no extra cost if you fall
under HMRC’s spotlight.
This protection includes complimentary telephone access to Business Support Advice Lines.
We strongly encourage you to protect against the risk of an HMRC enquiry.
Additional Benefits
